Proposal of Etiquette
1. Make a detailed, honest headline.
In order to explain this properly, let's create a fake situation; you're trying to start a debate about the recent passing of Proposition 8 in the Intense Debate forum.
Bad:
Proposition 8
Prop 8 debate, what is your opinion?
California court upheld Proposition 8
Good:
Proposition 8: A serious violation of civil freedoms.
Saving the sanctity of marriage; Proposition 8.
In case you're confused about why the latter two were right, please see #5.
2. Attempt to type as you would speak in real life.
Have you ever said L-O-L in real life? Do yu talk lyk dis irl? Hopefully not. Please, refrain from using internet-acronyms, or "chatspeak", unless absolutely vital, which should never be the case in theory. If you need to express an emotion not properly conveyed by text, please use an emoticon instead.
There's no need to obsess over this, but please use the Preview function, and go through your post with a fine-toothed comb. Use correct grammar and spelling whenever possible. If you naturally pause while saying something, add a comma. The first letter in a sentence needs a capital. This isn't complicated.
3. Treat this place as an area of discussion.
As a general rule, your additions to any topic should always be at least 3 sentances. Please do not post any one-word or one-sentence replies. If the poster is asking a question, please don't tell them to "Just Google it", post a link and a short description of a helpful site. This suggestion isn't too strict, since the purpose of the SCA Social 20 board is, of course, simply to have learn and exchange ideas; but it's greatly appreciated if you put some effort into this.
4. Respect other member's opinions.
Your favorite band, your religious beliefs, and your political opinions are no more right or wrong than any other person's tastes/beliefs/opinions. Keep it respectful, and keep all debates of any nature in "Intense Debate". This is the shortest one on the list, mainly because it's so simple - just remember, everyone else thinks that they're right, too. Respect other people and no name calling.
5. Don't expect others to start your conversation for you.
When you make a topic, especially when it's a debate, please include any relevant information necessary and at least a little of your input on the subject. Don't just ask/present something and expect the other members to get their own conversation rolling. Everyone should be able to directly reply to your original post.
Intense Debate forum exclusive:
If a debate you're posting is even REMOTELY related to current news, in order to prevent any false information/out of context references, please include a link to a reputable news source. Cite all appropriate sources that you may have gleaned any information from. If you include a quote, make sure it's pulled directly from an attributed link.
