The Teenager View Empty The Teenager View

Post  The Orange Fender Fri Sep 25, 2009 12:44 pm

something that has botherd me over the past while, is ageism. Because we are a "Teenager" the adults automatically rule us out of any deep conversation, and dont care about our opinion. You know that the word "Teenager" wasnt used untill after world war one? before that we were described as "young adults" but after a few people screwd up, we are now part of a society looked down upon, shunned, with no opinion that matters. thoughts?

The Teenager View Empty Ageism

Post  geckoluvr Fri Sep 25, 2009 4:04 pm

The most annoying thing is when you're driving and someone rips past you, driving 20 or even 30 clicks over the speed limit. Any adult who is ever there is always saying that its a teenager, although it is just as often an adult. It is also often the adults who claim they are more experienced and don't have to follow the laws that will speed through stop signs (sorry officer! I left my glasses at home ... jk) or talking on the cell phone (well sorry, officer ... it was an important business call). Adults are often grouping all teenagers into the same negative group but don't stop to look in the mirror at their own age group. Exclamation

I agree. Yes, there are many teenagers out there who may be rebellious and angry, but there's just as many, if not more, teenagers who act like young adults. At our age, yes, we are experimenting and trying to figure out who we are, but definitely does not mean that all of us take part in drugs or drinking. It's a stereotype. When a teenager smashes the stereotype and does something amazing and world-changing, people seem to think that they're the "exception", and that all other teenagers sit on their butts all day and watch tv or talk on the phone. Which is, of course, not true at all. In my opinion, we're the age group that is most likely to step out of our comfort zone and set an example for others. I also think that, in some cases, teenagers can be more mature than certain adults.

I just think that there are enough unintelligent, irresponsible, and reckless teenagers to make it a fair stereotype

Stereotypes aren't fair though. They put all people of a certain category into a box and are all labled the exact same thing, even though none may have anything to do with what they are being stereotyped as. If you have ever been in a situation of being classified as a certain type of person by someone before they actually got to know who you were, you should easily agree that it is not fair.

The Teenager View Empty Stereotypes

Post  happy_bunny404 Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:33 pm

The whole point of a stereotype is to single out a group or society and give them all the same label. I think that stereotypes in general are not fair, and the definition of the word implies that they aren't.

Extremely biased? against who/what? can u explain further please?
and i agree with bunny. Stereotyping is pretty much judging something before you truly understand it, or get to know it. who wants to be grouped into a category based on physical appearance, age, etc? I'm guessing not many people do because, for the most part, it's fairly degrading.

i say the stereotype for the most part is 100 % true...thats what saddens me... because of how people acted in past society, what makes us think we have to follow in their foot steps, stepping in every hole they did on the way? why not start off fresh, and make a name for ourselves? OH WAIT were just teenagers...you see my point?

Definitely. I mean, we may be young, and fairly inexperienced with the "ways of the world", but at the same time, we know enough to avoid mistakes made by people in the past. from the experiences they had, we can learn what to do and what not to from choices they made.

I would have to agree with Mossadegh, as much as a radical facebook group of like, 21 members trying to break the mold of teenage stereotypes would be cool, i just don't think its gonna get the job done. He was right in saying it was a vicious circle

As much as we hate the stereotype we are given, it is next to impossible for us, as a minority, to break it.

exactly. i really hate being clumped in with the people that do rediculous things. anytime anything goes wrong or something gets smashed its always "stupid kids" and "teenagers" that get blamed by the adults. and in ACTUALITY it very well could have been some phsyco 45 year old in a midlife crisis or something.
